IslandGrl called me yesterday a few hours before she was to leave for the airport to fly to the Philippines. It was morning time in Hawaii but around 11am over here in California. She was supposed to wake up and take her grandmother to breakfast before going to the airport but instead she was being her lazy self and called me so she could spend a few more minutes in bed. We talked for over half an hour about stuff.
Of course we chatted a bit about Hawaii. Things have been good over there. She's enjoying her time with family but they are driving her crazy and reminding her why she left the islands. She told me that she's been getting home before midnight every night. All she has done is go out to dinner with different girl friends but since they are all married and have children now they can't go out to clubs. I think she was trying to let me know that she hasn't hooked up with any guys while she is out there. It really isn't any of my business if she was going out and partying every night and getting freaky with guys. I mean we aren't even "seeing" each other anymore. I don't think talking on the phone constantly means we have an exclusive relationship. Even if we were she wouldn't have to report to me what she did every night and what time she came home. I'm totally not like that.
She did see her ex-boyfriend one day. She was going to hula practice and was stuck in traffic when someone walked up to her window and knocked on it. At first she was startled and then realized it was her ex-boyfriend (the one who dumped her to move to hawaii with his best friends wife). She said he asked her how she was doing and she told him that she was late for practice and rolled up her window. I actually thought that she would have seen him in a more formal way.
We talked a little about work. Apparently the other girl that works at her branch called her and told her that their manager actually checked with the airlines to verify all of her flight times. I guess she thought that IslandGrl was lying about what time her flights were, especially her Thursday night flight that she had to leave early from work for. IslandGrl thinks she is looking for a reason to fire her.
We did a quick recap of Philippines 101: squating, toilet paper, don't get married, don't go to bars alone, beware of getting ripped off, poverty, beautiful scenery...I also added a few things that I totally forgot about. I asked her how she planned on making phone calls. She said she had her cell phone with her. I told her the problem is that in America we use a totally different standard than the rest of the world. GSM and GPRS phones are only now starting to make their way to America and I know her phone is old so it's still probably on our old network which isn't compatible with worldwide networkds. I told her that at the airport in Hawaii she should buy calling cards or when she is in the Phillipines she can have her family take her to a store to buy a cheap cell phone. Even if her phone were to work she would have to buy a new sim card for it that will work in the Philippines. I guess they have pre-paid plans were you buy a certain number of credits up front and you can recharge your phone with more credits when you run out.
I asked her if she knew yet where exactly she was going. She said she didn't have a clue were she was headed to or where she would be visiting while she was there. She knows that relative will be picking them up at the airport but she has never met them before. Hopefully grandma will recognize them. She said she would be returning on Tueday to Hawaii, spend one more day there, then come home and go to work on Friday.
Then we got all mushy because we knew it was time to say goodbye. I told her that I was glad she called me while I was at work because it meant I couldn't get overly emotional. Upon hearing that she went, "awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" and told me she would call me as soon as she was back in Hawaii. I told her to be sure to have a good time in the Phillippines and to be safe.
I'm basically going to try to not think about her much while she is gone. It shouldn't be too hard since i'm all wrapped up in birthday plans. This is going to be the best birthday party ever! I hope I don't end up in the hospital.
