I had a great time last night!
I never got to take a nap but that was ok. On the way back up Hwy 17 from Santa Cruz I called up my hair stylist and left him a message asking if he had any open spots because I needed a haircut. He called back just as I was getting to the mall (I wanted to buy a new shirt) and told me to come in right away. After the haircut I went back to the mall and found a sweet Calvin Klein shirt on the discount rack for $16. I looked it over to make sure it didn't have any holes or loose threads but it was fine so I bought it. Of course the haircut and shopping left me with no time to rest before I had to get ready for my outing with Pamela.
I got to her place about 20 minutes late but I was talking to her on the phone and we had already discussed the difficulty in timing an arrival with bay area traffic, so a buffer zone was to be expected. The reason for my tardiness was the backed up traffic at the San Mateo bridge and not something lame like me getting lost.
So we headed into the city and decided to try to find this Thai place that Pamela had been to before. It was in the Japantown area so I let her navigate me there and then we drove around until we found it. With the restaurant located, Jitlada, we had to find parking. Pamela's eagle eyes spotted a parking spot when we were right around the corner.
We got to the restaurant just in time because they closed at 9:30 and it was a little before 9pm. They gave us a nice seat right by the front window too! One neat feature of this restaurant is the dessert menu which is placed under the glass top of the table. Very nice touch, I always hate asking for the menu back to just look at the dessert menu. They had one of those little place holders with a drink list on them that I looked at and I notice they had Monkey Picked Tie Guan Yin. MONKEY PICKED TEA! I didn't order it though because I wasn't sure if the monkey's who do the picking are treated right or not, but it turns out that it's just a name now and monkey's don't actually pick a damn thing.
Dinner was good. They actually asked us if we wanted dessert before they even brought out our food. I guess it was because they were close to closing. We passed on ordering dessert. We had the ginger shrimp rolls. It was like your standard thai shrimp salad roll with the rice noodle wrap but these were fried. The fried part wasn't stated in the description but it tasted good anyway. The ginger sauce was sooooo good! They garnished the plate with fresh fruit which she and I ate up right away. We both got the pad thai with prawns. I had been jonesin' for pad thai every since Pamela had mentioned possibly going to eat thai food. It was a sweet pad thai as opposed to a spicy one but it was still good. It was all very delicious and I will have to go back there again to try their other dishes.
From there we headed to 111 Minna. Let me first tell you that is is refreshing to finally have someone knows how to properly pronounce the name of the alley/street. It's MEE-NAH, not MIH-NUH! I know everyone and their momma pronounces it mih-nuh but Minna is a Japanese word and it's proper pronunciation is mee-nah. So with that out of the way we found a nice parking spot behind a dumpster. we had to go around the block once and do an illegal back up but that is all ok when you are doing it for really good parking. I almost hit this guys classic harley doing my 10 point parallel parking stunt.
We got in just before 10pm so it was only $5 each! Totally sweet! It was pretty much dead when we walked in so we walked straight up to the bar. We ordered two Havana Side Cars but the dude made them too fast for us to jot down all of the ingredients. There is rum in there and it is tasty, that's all that matters. The only bad part about our drink is that there was massive overspill and the sugar on the rim ran down the whole glass and made our hands sticky. By the time we got our drinks though the place had filled in nicely. I mean one minute we are placing our order, the next we turn around and the room is full. We finished our drink and then went to the restroom to wash our hands.
After cleaning up we took a quick tour of the art exhibit. They had a collection of different works by different artists. There wasn't one theme like there usually is. Some very interesting stuff. One piece was displayed in a glass IKEA case that Pamela owns. I will vouch for her on that one! I did see it with my own eyes. While walking around the place she made me sit in all of the wooden seats/benches because I had told her how surprisingly comfortable they are. They really are comfortable even though they are hard pieces of wood that look like fallen logs.
With the walk around over we settled into two gnarly wood chairs where we stayed for pretty much the whole night. We did a lot of talking and a lot of people watching. Oh, I totally forgot to mention to Pamela that there was going to be a somewhat gay crowd there. The proceeds from that night were going to an AIDS/HIV charity and Loveworks is just kind of a gay thing anyway. One of the DJs last night is a regular at The Bar on Castro so his peepz were representin' to the fullest. Pamela had a whole lot to say about many of the people there, and it was all funny as hell. That girl cracks me up. Our little lavender shirted friend provided the most entertainment. His booty was on autopilot all night long. Then there was the midget, P is for Porn, and several other assorted characters. The highlight of the night had to be when a possible he/she came over near us and started dancing around with this huge oriental style folding fan while another guy took pictures of her. Pamela looked at me and said "She's dancing with her biggest fan!"
I really did have a great time, even though I did absolutely no dancing! Pamela doesn't dance unless she is drunk. Yeah, she dropped that bomb on me after we got there. It was ok though I had a good time regardless. The music was great to listen too and Pamela's company and conversation was more than enough for me. Of course now that I accomplished my goal of getting her to actually come out to a "club" my next goal is to get her to come out to the dance floor.
Baby steps...
