So it took me like over 2 1/2 hrs to drive to my parents house on Christmas Eve. That was OK though because my parents were waiting for my brother to come home before going to my Aunt's house for the xmas shindig. We waited until 9pm and then left. I called him on his cell phone and left him a message letting him know that we had already left.
He never showed up at my Aunt's house. He didn't even call anyone to let us know that he wasn't coming. In fact we haven't heard from him at all since last weekend. Oh, don't worry, he hasn't dissappeared or anything like that. If he was actually gone, like off the face of the earth, we would hear form his girlfriend. If he is away from her for more than a few hours she starts calling the house asking for him.
He hasn't come to any family functions for the last few years, for about as long as he has been going out with this girl. I'm a little upset that he didn't show up. My grandparents barely survived this year. My Nana has only 1/4 of her lung capacity left, has diabetes, and has sustained a few injuries that have left her in pain and partially immobile. My Tata also has diabetes, had a blood clot in his leg, and needs surgery to try to repair the circulation in his leg. They were hospitalized several times this year and not once did he come visit them.
I can understand him not wanting to be around our parents, or our other family members, but I don't understand why he wouldn't want to see our Nana and Tata. The are my world. Both of my parents worked while we were growing up so they played a major role in raising us. They spoiled us rotten and never even so much as raised their voice to us. I would hate to be him when they have left us and he has to think back on all the times that he wasn't there for them during their last few years.
Anyway, enough of the bad stuff. Let's move on to the freak show that is my family. We went to my Aunt's house and it was packed to the brim with kids. 80% of the children there can be attributed to only 2 people in our family: My cousins Danny and John. They both started having kids early and often. Danny has like 6 kids and John has like 4 or 5.
The little monsters were running around screaming and yelling, like all other kids to be honest. But their behavior turns criminal in very little time. It started out with a baseball bat fight between my cousin Tony (14yrs old) and some of Danny's kids. They were not fighting over a baseball bat, they were beating each other with it. More specifically Danny's kids were wacking Tony with the bat and he took it away and twisted one of the younger kids arms until he started crying.
There was a lot more running around and violence between the children as the night went on. Back when me and my cousins were growing up anyone in our family had the authority to lay down the law. If one of us got out of hand and a Tio or Tia was around we would get it with a quickness. These kids, though, are untouchable. No one can so much as ask them to calm down without risking a brawl. So my entire family has to sit there and try their best to enjoy the holiday's.
There are only two reasons that I even show up on the Holidays: My grandparents and food. I looove my grandparents and I love food. I sat with my grandparents most of the night. They told me stories from their youth growing up in Mexico. I love hearing these stories. I gave my grandfather a big leather bound journal with his name inlayed in gold on the cover. He loved it and promised to start writing all his stories in it, which is exactly why I bought it.
We had a great variety of food. There were tamales of course: chicken, pork, jalapeno and cheese, raisen. My mom made my favorite beans with bacon, ham, and cheese! Oh I love cheese so much! There were also the American standards like turkey and ham, macaroni salad, potato salad, sweet potatos, the usual stuff. I forgot to bring home some tamales though. I'm thinking of driving back on Saturday just to go pick up a bag and bring home.
For all of the headaches that go along with spending a night trapped in a house with my crazy family, I still enjoy myself every time I do it. Can't wait for next year!
