I wasn't able to find any open wireless networks so I had to wait until I came home to post these entries. They pick up where I left off on Monday:
I woke up pretty early today, like at 6:45am. Some people were checking in to the room next to mine and they were making a lot of noise. I rubbed one out since i was awake and went back to sleep. Sweet sweet sleep.
I woke up again around 8:30am, the effect of the Sierra Nevada Wheat Beer gone without a trace. I turned on the TV and flipped through the channels. I watched some news, then I found Spongebob Squarepants. I watched that and then decided that I should take a shower.
The shower stall was weird. It didn't have a curtain, but it didn't have a door. it had a weird combination of both. it was like an accordion type thing. It had a metal frame that slid on the rails and in between the metal bars there was a hard plastic. It was a pretty small stall too with the shower head at about eye level which made it awkward to wash my hair.
After showering and getting ready I went to the hotels restaurant and had breakfast. The hostess lady wanted to know what I had on my shirt. I was/am wearing my Paul Frank Lucha Libre shirt. She apparently isn't either a Paul Frank or Lucha Libre fan. I explained to her that it was spanish for "professional wrestling" but she just wondered why it had pictures of masks and a monkey on it. I had the eggs benedict with a large cranberry juice.
After breakfast I went back to my room and packed my things. Then I strolled out to the bluffs and sat for a while. They give you binoculars with your room so you can whale watch. I looked and looked but saw no whales. I saw seagulls though. Some surfers too. I even spotted a lighthouse way down the coast that i couldn't see with my bare eyes.
I did the whole self checkout thing around 11:30 and then headed up Highway 1 to Hearst Castle. That's where I am right now as i'm writing this. There are a lot of old people here, mostly old people. I am a bit concerned for them because this place has a lot of stairs. They tell you how many stairs on in each of the different tours. When you buy your ticket they remind you of the stairs and let you know that it is physically demanding. I hope no one drops dead.
My tour doesn't start until 1:40pm so I've had to kill some time. I watched Hearst Castle Building the Dream in this theater that they have. It was neat. It of course is a very sanitized version of the life of William Randolf Hearst. What else could you expect at his own castle? Anyway, i'm here to look at the pretty house and grounds not to think of all the dirty deeds that Mr. Hearst must have commited to get the dough to build this place.
After the tour i'm going to probably head towards Turlock. I'll pick up something to eat on the way there. I should be leaving here around 3:30 or so and get to Turlock around 6 or 6:30pm. I won't have internet access there so I will have to jot down my entries on my laptop and add them when I get back to Fremont on Wednesday. I'll keep looking for free wireless access though and if I find someone who had left theirs open then I'll use it as much as I can.
Well, the tour lasted until about 4. Hearst has a pretty nice shack up on that hill. We got to see the Neptune pool, one of the guest houses, and the main house (Casa Grande). In Casa Grande we got to see the main room, the dining room, the billiard room, and then finally the indoor pool. All of the indoor places smelled like a 100 year old fart. They could use some Glade Plug-Ins.
As I thought taking pictures indoors was difficult. The lighting was very poor, they don't allow flash photography, and they don't allow tripods. A few indoor shots came out ok. From a picture taking standpoint being outside was way more interesting. it really looked like WR Hearst just threw things together. He definitely could have used in interior decorator to make things work better. The only exception was the indoor pool. I could have taken so many pictures in there but the lighting was just all off. It would take a tripod and some screens over the large windows to soften the background light that you catch.
We didn't have any deaths on the tour but we did have a lot of complaining. They clearly stated how much walking, standing and stair climbing was going to happen. I guess some people didn't take it seriously. Oh well.
So after the tour I just decided to grab something to eat at the little snack place that they had in the visitor's center. I got the hot dog combo which cost me $8.95. That was for one ordinary size hot dog, fries, and a medium drink.
I ate it outside and was accosted by birds. Birds of different species slowly closed in on me from all angles. The worst was this little black bird, very tiny but very aggressive. He was the only one to hop up on the table I was at. He walked right up to my food tray, looked me dead in the eye, and hissed at me like he was about to kill me. The hissing was accompanied by a puffing of his feathers and a craning of his neck like linda blair in the Excorcist. I was confused. Was I supposed to shriek and run away? I would have given the bird some of my fries but it was so tiny. If I had given the bird the food it wanted it would have choked and died. There was a seagull that did this loud squawking and wing flapping thing. it was very annoying. I felt bad for it though because it had a gimpy leg. It reminded me of some of the chinese girls you see walking around San Francisco. What's up with all the asian gimpy legness?
After I finished my hot dog and was satisfied I left, leaving the bucket of fries behind. The birds went wild and swarmed on it as soon as I stood up. Whether they choked and died on the fries was none of my concern. They shouldn't try to eat what is too big for them to swallow.
I spent the rest of the day on the highway driving towards Turlock. Most of the drive was with the car set on cruise control. It was a long boring drive. I think if I had the Corvette I would have enjoyed it much more. Of course I would have been going about 100 miles an hour and handled some of the twisty roads much better.
