Yep, I'm back. I survived the freezing rain and wind, mostly due to the new jacket that I bought at REI the other weekend. I am already in love with this jacket. It can keep you dry and warm in the wettest, windiest weather but it is still stylish enough to wear out on the town.
This trip was really draining. We took a red eye out to Boston on Monday night and arrived Tuesday morning. We landed just in time to miss the worst of the storm where it was pouring rain and the wind was gusting up to 60mph. This crazy weather was all due to hurricane wilma and another storm system that had come down from Canada.
I'm not going to go into the details of my business there but the mission was accomplished, at least for this first part. There is a slight chance that I may have to make a trip or two back there before the end of the year. That's what being a corporate whore is all about I guess. Climbing that corporate ladder.
Let's talk about important stuff, FOOD! 'Cause you know a hoe gotta eat!
That first day after business was done in Boston we drove up to the second site in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We made it there in time to have a late lunch so we started thinking about places to eat. On a whim I said, "hey let's go to Maine!" Well what do you know? Maine was right across the river!
So we went to Maine and found this little cafe that made the most kick ass grilled sandwiches. They even made Cuban pressed sandwiches. I was so impressed that these white people in the middle of nowhere knew what a Cuban pressed sandwich was. I wasn't terribly hungry though so I had their version of a grilled cheese sandwich. Oh man was this thing to die for! It had three different types of cheese and had the same kind of bread used in a Cuban. They also made it spicy! There were hot peppers and onions grilled in this thing with some pesto sauce to boot! Even the cole slaw was yummy and I hate cole slaw.
The place was owned/operated by a husband and wife. The husband cooked and the wife was the waitress. It was so cute. They both were business people in Boston and then one day decided to give up the city life and start their own little cafe. The wife even started making her own pastries to sell in the cafe. Those were good too! Yeah, this fat boy had to have some sweets, haha.
After dinner we found a movie theater and saw Domino. I still don't know what to think about that movie. It had action in it but I don't know if i really cared for any of the characters. They were giving out small posters for the new Memoirs of a Geisha movie that is coming out soon. I grabbed a few so be on the lookout for a Memoirs of a Geisha layout soon!
After the movie we chilled for a bit before heading back to Maine to have dinner. (did I mention that by going to Maine we hit up 3 states in one day?) The woman at the cafe made some recommendations for dinner so we had to listen to what she had to say. We were looking for this place called MC's in Perkin's Cove.
We found Perkin's Cove with the help of our handy GPS. The place looked deserted! It was a sleepy little town right in a cove, I guess that is how it got it's name, heehee. So we went to the address that we had for the restaurant and it was closed on Tuesdays. Everything in this town was closed on tuesdays! Well, Barnacle Billy's wasn't closed on tuesdays so that is where we have to eat.
Barnacle Billy's wasn't that bad at all. I had the Maine Mussels in a garlic/butter sauce. They were good but not as good as New Zealand or PI Mussels. For dinner I had the surf and turf. The steak was cooked perfectly and the shrimp were cooked with some kind of stuffing on top of them. It was all very tasty. Our server was the cutest thing ever. Her name was Jannine and she lived right on the other side of the cove. She even showed us exactly which one her house was. I wanted to put her in my pocket and take her home with me, like the cup I stole. I finished off my dinner with a nice port wine.
The next memorable meal was last night. We went to this place called Durgin Park over in the Faneuil Hall area of Boston. It was a classic New England experience. The waitress was old and frumpy and had a permanent scowl on her face. When she brought our napkins she just threw them down in front of us, no folding or anything. Then she dumped the silverware at the end of the table like we were supposed to arrange it ourselves. It was hilarious. New England is cold in more ways than one.
Despite the temperament of the staff our meal was wonderful. I had three Jack and Cokes, hahaha. Delicious! With my drinks I had some Boston Baked Beans (yummy!), Shrimp Scampi (mmmmm!), and a Yankee cut of Prime Rib (supposedly 12 ounces but it looked way bigger). The portions at this place are huge! The Durgin cut of prime rib looks like that big slab of meat that they put on the car at the beginning of the Flintstones with a huge ass bone and everything sticking out of it. Their lobsters are huge too! I didn't get one of those. All of their steak cuts are enough to feed at least two people but don't ask to split a plate or they will throw your ass out in the cold, hahaha. For dessert I we had strawberry shortcake and indian pudding, and I had another Jack and Coke!
From there we went in search of Cheers. One co-worker said that she had been there the night before and led us to it. When we got there is was Cheers but it wasn't "the cheers" It was a replica for tourists, not the actual bar where the show was supposed to take place. We got directions to the actual place but then that co-worker started complaining that they didn't want to walk anymore so we just stayed at fake cheers. I had a few more Jack and Cokes before last call and then we went out in the cold to walk back to the hotel. With my warm jacket and thermals (and the jack and coke) I was feeling good but apparently it was way too cold for our one other co-worker so I flagged down a cab and we were taken back to the hotel (I won't even get into what a piece of crap the Boston Park Plaza is).
Now, I'm back home and I haven't accomplished much in the way of cleaning my room. I should do that tonight.
