especially when they are married to each other.
Ok, let me explain my fucked up roommate situation. Back in 1999 I graduated from college and was living with my parents in Turlock. I'm actually at my parents house as I type this right now. Well, I got a job in San Mateo in September and I drove my sorry ass from Turlock to San Mateo and back every fucking day, Monday thru Friday.
So obviously I got tired of spending about 6 hours a day on the fucking freeway. So I started looking for apartments in the Bay Area. I had no idea where I wanted to live except I know that I didn't want to live in Oakland or Berkeley. It became obvious that I wasn't going to be able to afford my own place thanks to the booming dot com bastards running rents through the roof.
So I started looking through several websites for roommates. I posted on ad on Roommatelocator.com. That was sometime in October of '99. Around the end of October or the beginning of November I got an email from a girl inquiring about the ad that I had posted. We set up a meeting for the next week in Fremont, where we would discuss the details of renting the place she had found and kind of get a feel for whether we wanted to live in the same residence.
I showed up and there was The Girl waiting with The GUy. We all introduced ourselves and started talking. We exchanged all the vitals such as where we worked, and what our personalities where like. The Girl had some special requirements with regard to who she would share a house with. She worked somewhat in the law enforcement field and couldn't share a residence with anyone who did drugs or engaged in any kind of illegal activity. Well, at that point in time I didn't even drink so that wasn't a problem. At the end of the meeting we drove to the house, she had gotten a key to the place, and did a quick walk through.
Ok, enough of all this bullshit. I brought my iCrap home Friday night and hooked it all up. I tried going online and I got an error message that the server could not be found So I checked the TCP/IP information and saw that i was getting an IP address. So I was like, what the fuck?
Then I remembered that we had gotten a new cable modem sent to us from ATT. We didn't hook it up because we have our computers networked using an Linksys router. We couldn't get the computers to work with the new modem. It turns out with this new modem we can't have all of our computers online at the same time. We have to purchase separate IP addresses for each computer from ATT.
Well, it turns out that my roommates (who are now married to each other) hooked up the new cable modem. I don't know whether they have actually purchased separate IP addresses or if they are just making sure not to go online at the same time. I would think the latter is more plausible.
I told The Guy that I noticed that they had hooked up the new cable modem and asked him how they fixed the problem of having the computers networked without separate IP addresses. He said that he didn't know, his friend who stayed over a few weeks ago got everything working. So I was all like, "well why didn't you tell me so I could have set my computer up at the time." And he was all like, "well, I think we aren't allowed to network our computers anymore without paying for it. I think with the new modem they can tell if you are trying to get internet access for more than one computer" and I was all like, "well I don't have any problem paying for my own IP address if thats what ATT wants us to do" and he was all like, "yeah, uh, I don't think that's going to work" with that I knew the conversation wasn't going to get anywhere so I just gave up.
You see, the cable modem bill is in The Guys name. The Guy won't call ATT and ask for another IP address even though I offered to pay for it. There is not much I can do with regards to anything at the house because the situation is stacked against me. The Girl is the only one on the lease because she didn't let the landlady know that she planned on sharing the house with others. The cable modem bill is in The Guys name because he thought he was going to be the only one wanting broadband internet access. Well, The Girl wanted access also but they didn't know how to network the computers back then. I offered to network the computers if I could have access also, I also offered to pay for 1/3 of the monthly bill. So I bought the equipment and with some help with the labor from The Guy I got our computers networked. Now they cut me out of the loop and they are still using my equipment to enjoy broadband access.
My temporary solution to this is to disconnect my router and cables and throw them in my closet. I am going to order my own broadband internet access with my own cable modem. My long term solution is to move out and find a more fair living situation. Maybe even get my own place now that I am more in a position to afford it. Of course the shit will really hit the fan when the long term solution goes into effect. The bottom line is they can't afford the house we are living in. They need a roommate. Now that they are married there is no way that they are going to allow a stranger to move in. However, none of the people that knows them will want to live with them after seeing what I have had to put up with over the last 3 years.
Oh fucking well...
